Our September Beauty Drawer - New Products We Love!

September 4, 2013

Hello Lovely  Readers~

Welcome to our September Beauty Drawer post! We can’t wait to share some new products that we are loving. Also, if you want to read more about our tried and true favorites, make sure to check out our “beauty drawer” page

We love fall and winter - they are just “our months” when it comes to beauty and style. Maybe it’s our dark hair and very fair skin, but our favorite makeup and clothes just seem to be more fun during the cooler months. In light of this, we are highlighting some new products that we have tested out that are fab!

Urban Decay Naked Skin Finishing Powder (we use naked light):

-  We just picked this up last week, as we already love using the coordinating foundation. The UD foundation is what we wear day-to-day when we want makeup staying powder and a full-coverage look. This powder blends easily with a demi-matte finish that provides a natural look. We also like that it’s oil-free and hasn’t caused any skin breakouts.

Tarte Amazonian Clay Full Coverage Airbrush Foundation/Airbuki Bamboo brush (we use fair honey):

- A talc-free, 12 hour medium, coverage powder foundation. This foundation is great for the weekends or day-to-day if you are in a hurry. While it does have good coverage, we still use primer and concealer with it. We found that it does not emphasize pores as the original bare minerals products could do (not to be confused with the new Ready foundation, we do like it a lot as well).

Tarte Clean Slate Eye Primer:

- A 12-hr smoothing eye shadow primer that helps shadow last! We also like that this product is paraben free.

Bare Mineral Marvelous Moxie Lip Color in Live It Up (the perfect cherry red color):

- As you readers know, we have had a love affair with this lipstick since it came out a few months back. We were looking for a natural alternative to drugstore colors that we have used in the past. The pigment and moisturizing ability are great, and it’s not drying. But, you must use a lip liner for optimum results, especially when wearing the brighter colors.

Tarte EmphasEyes Inner Rim Eye Brightener:

-This liner is great for making the eyes appear more awake and less red.

Tarte Smooth Operator Amazonian Clay Waterproof Concealer (we use fair):

- This is a fabulous waterproof, full-coverage concealer that has buildable coverage. We also like that it comes in a very fair shade that matches our complexion perfectly.

Happy make-up shopping!

DoubleTake Makeup Monday: LORAC Pro Palette

January 14, 2013

W here to share something I recently added to my “wants” list.  I love all things makeup and always find myself browsing for new items to create fun looks and/or quicken up my “prettifying” routine in the mornings. While I was browsing some recent video tutorials, I noticed this palette was the go-to item for a new blogger I’ve been following lately.  Cara of Maskcara.com (you must check out her picture and video tutorials - they are awesome!!) uses this palette to create amazing looks, from everyday natural to looks copying Megan Fox and Kim Kardashian.  So while my makeup counter is pretty full of plenty of great shadows and combo sets that I love, this is one that I feel very compelled to purchase due to the fab reviews and versatility showcased in Cara’s makeup videos.  I plan to head to my local Sephora store sometime this week to pick it up.  I will report back next Monday on my thoughts!
Happy Monday!
P.S. Here are some of our other all-time favorite makeup items!

A Few of Our DoubleTake Skincare Favorites!

January 5, 2013

imageHello Lovely Readers-

Today we wanted to discuss some of our favorite skincare items. We received great feedback on our beauty post from last week so we thought we’d try a second edition that’s more focused on our skincare products. We’ve used most of the items below for years and they are a must in our daily skincare routine. Here are the details:

Clarisonic Mia- A year or two ago we each splurged and purchased this amazing skin cleansing brush.  We both love how it is so easy to use and removes all the gunky makeup from our pores at the end of the day.  We have the classic version, but Clarisonic now also makes the Mia 2 which features a few more bells and whistles.

Purpose face soap - This soap is great at getting off face makeup, even eye makeup.  Instead of wasting expensive soap to get your makeup off, we suggest using this very affordable one as the first round of cleansing (to remove the grime) then follow it up with a pump of your higher-end cleanser.  The “good for you” ingredients of the 2nd cleanser can now penetrate your skin with the first layer of makeup being removed. Of course if you don’t wear much makeup to begin with, then this might sound like an unnecessary step.  But we find it very useful at making sure our faces are squeaky clean (in conjunction with using the Mia brush) and ready for application for moisturizer and night treatment in the evening.

Biore nose stripes - These beauties have been around for years.  We can’t imagine life without this clever little strips to remove those yucky blackheads we all seem to get.  If you are one of those that doesn’t struggle with them, consider yourself very fortunate!  For the rest of us, this $8 box of strips provides easy and thorough cleansing of dirt and impurities (they also come in a version for the forehead and cheeks).

Origins Clear Improvement Mask - This is a newer item in our beauty drawer. Even at 30, we both still have problems with breakouts. This charcoal mask from Origins is super gentle and non-drying, but provides calming and clearing of any blemishes that happen to pop up.  Unlike a lot of other acne masks, this one doesn’t leave your skin parched and cracked.

Mario Badescu Drying Cream - This is a great spot treatment for those of us that are sensitive to benzoyl peroxide and/or salicylic acid.  This sulfur based treatment is great to put on at night time (it is a white paste, so unfortunately doesn’t work well for the day time).

Belli Spot Treatment - This is another great spot treatment that helps calm and prevent breakouts without the use of harsh ingredients.  It features colloidal sulfur, tea tree oil, and chamomile. It’s very affordable to, which we always like.  The gel absorbs pretty quickly, so works well if you want to wear under makeup.

For quick reference, we have provided shopping links below for all the products in our review today.  For more information about the skin and beauty products we reviewed last week, visit our post here.

Happy Saturday!

Our DoubleTake on Best of Beauty 2012!

December 29, 2012

Hello Lovely Readers~

Today we are beyond excited to bring you our DoubleTake Beauty Report of 2012! To celebrate a new year in beauty, we are going to review our top 13 products of the year to get you ready for 2013. We totally love all the products listed here and hope you will try some out for yourselves. Since we’ve tested hundreds of products since our high school days, we want to save you the hassle and tell which ones have earned our stamp of approval. We have included a concise overview of each product and included links for where you can look up additional product info. Most of our links are for Sephora, the holy grail beauty retailer for makeup lovers like us!! If you don’t end up loving a product as much as we do, no worries! Return it back to Sephora with no questions asked! We think beauty shouldn’t be stressful, and Sephora fits this perfectly.

So in no particular order, here’s our 2012 all-star products:

  • bareMinerals Purely Nourishing Cream:  This product is amazing! We never thought we’d use a product with any type of “oil” - but these natural essential oils are just right for combating flaky skin patches this winter, without breaking us out. Also great for delicate skin near the eye and neck redness caused from wearing slightly itchy winter clothing. We use this product nightly.
  • Rodan + Fields Micro-dermabrasion Paste: The perfect exfoliator - it works wonders! Even if you aren’t new to exfoliating, this product will astound you. It makes your skin feel baby-bottom-smooth (okay, so we just made that up) and allows makeup to go on like a dream.  This product is fabulous to use all year, but especially crucial during the winter months when dead skin can really start to dull your complexion.
  • BeautyBlender Sponge: This multi-tasking tool is great for applying all types of foundations, liquid or powder. We have used this for years and highly recommend it. While it is not available to purchase in Sephora stores, they do offer it online. The price tag may seem a bit steep for a makeup sponge but trust us, it is well worth it.  You can use the sponge wet or dry, but our fave technique is to use it damp (run under water and then use a washcloth or towel to absorb extra water) and then apply liquid foundation and set with powder.  It helps get in all the crevices, such as the eye area and around the nose, providing flawless application for that soft-focus effect. It’s a definite must in each of our makeup bags!
  • bareMinerals Neutralizing Face Primer: Let’s start by saying we couldn’t wait to try this primer. Both of us naturally have very fair skin with redness. This color-correcting primer has a yellow tint that immediately calms our red areas and prepares the skin for flawless application of foundation. It’s also great for minimizing pores and shine. It’s a must try if you haven’t loved the old “green to correct red” primers from Smashbox and Clinique.
  • bareMinerals Ready Foundation: We’ve worn bareMinerals original and matte foundations off and on for over 10 years. We were thrilled when this new version came out a few months ago. The coverage is perfect - buildable without getting chalky. It’s also more hydrating than the original version and doesn’t settle into pores. We highly recommend getting a color match because the pan color doesn’t accurately represent how it will look on the skin. From our experience the shades tend to run a bit light. As fair complected as we are (practically in the ghost category!!), we don’t even wear the lightest shade in this new line. For reference, both of us use the shade called “fairly light”. We recommend this fabulous product to anyone that is new to makeup or foundation or is afraid to look like they are wearing a lot of product. It goes on so quickly and stays put all day, which is a definite win-win!
  • Urban Decay Naked Skin Foundation: We just started testing this about two weeks ago, and we are already calling this our holy grail foundation when we need fast, full coverage. We always wear concealer - always.  So when this product was released as a foundation miracle, we were skeptical about full, natural coverage without still needing a ton of concealer afterwards. But ladies, we must say this product delivers! While not as “natural” as bareMinerals ingredients are, this is paraben and oil free. And the best part: the coverage is impeccable. There are days when we can even skip the concealer because it covers all imperfections. We do want to note that the application method is very important. We first purchased the Good Karma Optical Blurring brush to use with it.  Although it gets rave reviews from many users, we both agreed that it did the foundation no justice.  It absorbed too much product, leaving us with thin, splotchy coverage. Instead we use a stippling brush from Ulta from the Real Techniques brand. For around $10, you can’t go wrong with purchasing this brush. Regarding shade range, there are a ton of options to pick from! We also found this foundation runs a tad light, so probably best to get color matched. For reference, we both use shade 0.5.
  • bareMinerals Stroke of Light: We started testing this back in October, after deciding that our undereye area needed a little boost with 30 just around the corner. This wand delivers an optical blurring concealer that helps hide undereye circles. Use just a little product to keep it from creasing. We use both shade 1 (very light) and 2 (light with a golden undertone).
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay Waterproof Brow Mousse: This is hands down the easiest eye brow product to use. It comes in three colors and we use the darkest one called rich brown. Tarte even designed a fabulous double sided brush that comes with the mousee as a set, as seen above in the picture. The mousse-gel type formula is lightweight and stays all day. The brush provides easy application even for newbies.  This is one fantastic product and will forever have a home in our makeup drawer.
  • Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Adored: A long-lasting cheek color that delivers lightweight, buildable color. Adored has the perfect mixture of peach and pink, that can be worn daily. It also has a little bit of a sheen for an angel-like glow. And who doesn’t want an ethereal glow that lasts all day?
  • Tarte Glamazon Pure Performance 12-Hour Lipstick in Fierce: We searched high and low for a natural lip color that was a perfect shade of red. This new lipstick line from Tarte combines both safe ingredients, plus pure pigmented color that makes teeth look whiter. With this formula, a little goes a long way. We also recommend lining the lip first if you are new to wearing this bright of a lip color.
  • L’Oreal Voluminous Million Lashes and Covergirl Lash Perfection MascaraThese are the best drugstore brand mascaras we’ve used over the year. First step is several coats of L’Oreal, followed with the Covergirl Lash Perfection. We promise, buying two drugstore brands is worth the investment. It really makes a difference to have the first step of making the lashes fuller, then lengthening them without making the lashes wet so they don’t stick together.
