We can hardly believe it has actually been 5 years since we created TheDoubleTakeGirls.com. To commemorate this special occasion, Lindsay and I thought we’d give you a peek at some amazing new office accessories, bags and oh so cute tops from katespade.com plus share some of our thoughts on this crazy yet fabulous blogging journey!
At the start of each school year, one of our very favorite things was to pick out a new backpack and school supplies. From pencil bags to pens, folders to spiral notebooks – finding the prettiest desk gear was something we each loved! Now back to a little bit about our blogging journey…
If you haven’t heard about how we started, Lindsay and I talked about creating a blog for years through college. We loved reading blogs like Pink Peonies, The Sweetest Thing Blog, What I Wore, Veronika’s Blushing, and Kendi Everyday. One night after a crazy week at our day jobs {I work in Marketing and Lindsay is a Registered Dietitian and is now a nutrition professor at a local university} we went out for dinner and some shopping. Linds and I decided it was time to share our love for bargain shopping, affordable style and all things deals with more than just each other and our close friends!
Picking the name “The DoubleTake Girls” was an easy decision so we grabbed the domain name asap and hired a company to build our site. Looking back, we had not a clue what were doing and didn’t even use social media other than our personal Facebook pages. Who would have thought that hard work and dedication to a hobby we love would be so rewarding and bring us so many friendships!
Linds and I get asked a lot of questions about how we decided to start a blog, what it’s like to have a blogging partner, etc. so I thought it would be fun to share a few of them!
1. What is it like working with your sister?
We love it! It’s amazing to have someone that can provide immediate feedback and support at a moment’s notice. Plus it allows us to tag team projects and handling social media with our roles as wives and working moms. It’s a huge blessing that we only live a few miles away from each other now. Our little girls love playing together while we take yard or garage door #ootd photos. 😉
2. What is your favorite blog post or collaboration?
Last spring we had the honor of kate spade new york reaching out to us to do one of our first designer brand collaborations! Linds and I couldn’t keep from smiling the whole shoot. See our girls’ night in post here. Needless to say we both were over the moon to represent such an amazing company that we love! Another exciting opportunity has been going to NYFW! We’ve been twice so far {sadly our 3rd trip in February didn’t happen thanks to the crazy blizzard that hit the day we were to arrive} and it is all such a fun whirlwind! We met so many amazing bloggers and had a blast attending fashion shows and showroom visits. See our post archives from last September for some behind the scenes details of our NYC sister fun!
3. What’s been the hardest thing about blogging?
I think it still surprises both of us how long it actually takes to maintain a blog. It’s all such fun but there is a delicate balance to ensure we don’t work too much on the blog/social media to allow us time to take care of ourselves and our families. The great part of having a duo blog is when life gets crazy for one of us that the other sister can pick up the slack. We are truly blessed to have non-stop sister support!
4. What is something that most people don’t know about you all?
Linds and I were actually adopted. Our birth mom’s only requests were that we would not be separated and that we would go to a Christian family. We are so amazingly blessed to have the most incredible brother and parents. From a young age they told us about our adoption story and it is a passion that we will both always support. God provided for us each in a miraculous way and we will never forget the immensity of our parent’s decision to choose adoption.
5. Do you have advice to other bloggers / working moms / girl bosses?
We sure do! First of all, don’t chase things that aren’t your passion. You must love what you do! Our motto is life is too short to wear clothes that you don’t love – or a job that doesn’t fulfill you! Also, definitely find a mentor. It makes such a huge difference to have someone that has already gone before you and made mistakes so you don’t have to! We’ve made so many amazing blogging friends over the years and having their ongoing support means the world to us.
